Sign 73: Ancestor Chen Tuan

Superior Fortune

Story

Chen Tuan, a Daoist of the late Five Dynasties and early Song, lived in seclusion on Mount Hua. He was famously fond of sleeping, once napping for over a hundred days. Emperors Shizong of Later Zhou and Taizu of Song repeatedly summoned him, but he did not go, receiving the title "Master Xiyi". He authored the "Diagram of the Ultimate Void" and created the sleeping meditation, living to 118. This sign signifies quietude and non-action, bringing blessings and longevity.

Oracle Poem

On Mount Hua high, he slept for years unknown, a yellow millet dream not yet full-blown. Ask not of worldly rise and fall, in deep white clouds, a transcendent lives withal.

Interpretation

This sign is mainly auspicious, suitable for cultivating one's nature. In career, go with the flow, win without contention; in love, detachment brings endurance; in wealth, not being greedy gains. The poem's "deep white clouds" hints at tranquility leading to far-reaching success.
