Sign 72: Gao Chong Lifts the Rolling Carts

Lowest Fortune

Story

Gao Chong, a famous general of the Southern Song who resisted the Jin, was unmatched in valor. He successively lifted eleven iron rolling carts. As the twelfth cart pressed down, his warhorse exhausted its strength, and Gao Chong was crushed to death. This sign warns of exhausting one's strength and perishing, cautioning against overexertion.

Oracle Poem

Eleven iron chariots in a chain, the general's divine strength none could contain. But the horse's power finally failed, blood stained his armor as the sun westerly sailed.

Interpretation

This sign is very inauspicious, warning to act within one's limits. In career, do not greedily advance, lest it collapse; in love, forcing matters yields no result; in wealth, overdrawing will bring loss. The poem's "horse's power failed" advises knowing when to stop.
