签68:刘禅乐不思蜀

Inferior Fortune

Story

After the fall of Shu Han, Liu Shan was captured and taken to Luoyang. Sima Zhao held a banquet and ordered Shu music to be played. The Shu ministers all wept, but Liu Shan laughed and enjoyed himself. Sima Zhao asked, "Do you miss Shu?" Liu Shan replied, "I am happy here; I do not miss Shu." This fortune signifies that those who forget their roots will ultimately fail.

Oracle Poem

The homeland's songs and music turn into tears; Ah Dou laughs and revels, drunk at the golden goblet. He does not miss the land of Shu's mountains and rivers; Only serves as a happy soul in a foreign land.

Interpretation

This fortune is inauspicious, warning not to forget one's original heart. In career, complacency will lead to elimination; in relationships, only pursuing pleasure will eventually lead to loss; in finances, one may easily eat up all savings. The phrase "does not miss Shu" in the poem reminds one to hold fast to one's foundations.
