Sign 44: Wang Xizhi Exchanged Calligraphy for Geese

Superior Fortune

Story

Wang Xizhi was obsessed with geese. Hearing that a Taoist priest on Mount Yin kept fine geese, he went to see them. The priest said, "If you write the 'Dao De Jing' for me, I will give you the whole flock." Wang wrote it gladly and took the geese home in a cage. His calligraphy penetrated wood three-tenths of an inch. Later generations revered him as the Sage of Calligraphy. Emperor Taizong of Tang loved his "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion" so much that he ordered it buried with him in the Zhaoling Mausoleum.

Oracle Poem

Exchanging writing for geese, the interest is true; His brush danced like a dragon and snake, divine and wonderful. The Orchid Pavilion masterpiece became a vanished echo; Wind and rain lock smoke and dust at Zhaoling.
