Qian 15: Su Qin Achieves Glory

Superior Fortune

Story

After hanging from a beam and stabbing his thigh, Su Qin traveled again to persuade the warring states. First he spoke to King Wen of Yan, then to King Su of Zhao, proposing the strategy of uniting six states against Qin. The King of Zhao was pleased and granted him chariots, gold, and silk, commissioning him to ally the feudal lords. Thus Su Qin wore the seals of six states as chief of the alliance. Passing through Luoyang, his parents greeted him at the outskirts, and his sister-in-law crawled on the ground. This qian signifies extreme hardship turning into success and fame.

Oracle Poem

Aspiring high, beam and thigh endured, / Six states’ seals on gold marten fur hung. / Where now the cold eyes that once obscured? / Prostrate at Luoyang, praises are sung.

Interpretation

This is an upper auspicious qian, like rain on parched seedlings. In career, all previous efforts will soon pay off explosively, bringing high rank and power—but guard against arrogance. In love, after success you may attract many admirers, but discern true from false intentions. Wealth is extremely prosperous, fame and fortune both achieved, but do not forget friends from humble days. This qian reminds: success is the best revenge, but forgiveness is the highest realm.
