Qian 14: Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya Share Gold

Superior Fortune

Story

Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya were close friends from youth and once ran a business together. Guan Zhong was poor and each time took double the share of profit. Bao Shuya did not consider him greedy, knowing Guan Zhong needed to support his mother. Later, Bao Shuya recommended Guan Zhong to Duke Huan of Qi. Guan Zhong became prime minister, united the feudal lords, and brought order to the realm. Guan Zhong sighed, "My parents gave me life, but Bao Shuya knows my heart." This qian signifies true friendship and priceless trust.

Oracle Poem

Taking more gold was not a sign of greed; / Bao’s knowing heart was like the sea’s embrace. / Had they quarreled for every little need, / How could the state of Qi gain such a place?

Interpretation

This is an upper auspicious qian, like a bond of metal and stone. In career, partners are loyal and trustworthy, capable of handling great matters—but you must also treat them sincerely. In love, true love transcends material calculations; mutual trust and understanding are key. In wealth, sharing profits leads to greater development; do not hoard alone. The core of this qian: trust is the greatest capital; a soulmate is worth more than a thousand coins.
