Sign 2: Su Qin Fails the Examination

Lowest Fortune

Story

Su Qin, a strategist of the Warring States period, studied under Master Ghost Valley in his early years. After completing his studies he traveled to various states to lobby, but met with rejection everywhere. When he returned home, his wife did not leave her loom, his sister-in-law refused to cook for him, and his parents disowned him. Su Qin then redoubled his efforts in study, tying his hair to a beam and pricking his thigh with an awl to stay awake, and deeply pondered Master Tai Gong's *Yin Fu Classic*, finally grasping the art of vertical alliance. Later he wore the seals of six kingdoms as prime minister and returned home in glory. This sign captures that period of hardship, teaching people that they should know adversity and then strive.

Oracle Poem

Gold scattered, ambition hard to fulfill, / In disgrace he returns from the exam, face full of shame. / Do not mock young Su Qin of that day, / In the assembly of dragons and clouds he sought a marquis's name.

Interpretation

This sign is very inauspicious, like a cold crow perched on a withered tree. In career, current efforts yield little results; you may easily encounter jealousy from petty people—you need patience to gather strength. In love, you may meet a fickle person; much giving brings little return, so do not force. Financial luck is low; avoid investments and guard against loss of money. Yet the sign is not hopeless: Su Qin later succeeded, indicating that in difficulties you should reflect on yourself, refine your skills, and await the right time.
